The new executive director of the Klamath Water Users Association is glad to be back in Southern Oregon.

Greg Addington grew up in Eagle Point and spent time when he was growing up with family in the Klamath Basin. His father was raised in Klamath Falls and he still has relatives here.

Coming back to Southern Oregon was an opportunity to get closer to home and was a natural fit, Addington said.

"It felt like the right thing to do," he said.

Addington graduated from the University of Idaho in 1993.

He and his wife, Monica, have two children, a 6-year-old daughter, Sarah, and a 2-year-old son, Reese. His wife works with Farm Credit Services in Salem and she and the children plan to move to Klamath Falls at the end of the school year.

Following his graduation from the University of Idaho, Addington went to work for Cenex, a fuel supply company in Walla Walla, Wash.

In 1995 he began working at the Grange Co-op in Central Point and from there went to work for the Oregon Farm Bureau, representing farmers' and ranchers' interests as a regional manager for six years.

He has spent the last three years representing the Oregon Farm Bureau in government affairs in Salem, lobbying on issues such as fish and wildlife, livestock and wetlands.

Addington knew the issues in the Basin would be complex to deal with, but he said it really hit home the more he dug into it.

"There are some huge challenges - some huge opportunities here," Addington said.

Addington will begin his role as executive director the first week of April. One of the duties he plans to continue from former director Dan Keppen will be writing the weekly newsletter, keeping water users informed about changes in Basin water issues.
