An update on the settlement
Here is a general overview of developments regarding the proposed Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement in the past few weeks. Negotiations with Portland-based PacifiCorp are ongoing. The utility company would need to agree to remove four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River as part of the agreement. Spokesmen for the company have said the company is still weighing its options as to whether dam removal, or installation of fish ladders will affect ratepayers the least. Boards of directors of 12 irrigation districts on the Klamath Reclamation Project voted to support the agreement. The districts represent 90 percent of the acreage irrigated by Upper Klamath Lake and the Klamath River and don’t include those served primarily by the Lost River. A few other districts have yet to make a decision. Counties are continuing their reviews of the document and collecting comments from the public. A proposed facilitated meeting between irrigators on and off the Klamath Reclamation Project and the Klamath Tribes has yet to be scheduled by Klamath County. The meeting will seek to reconcile differences regarding the agreement. A meeting of the stakeholders who crafted the agreement is expected in the next week or two in Ashland. An update on where those involved stand regarding the document and how to proceed will be the main focus.
